NTP Pool Project

The NTP Pool is a massive virtual cluster of volunteer-operated time servers providing free, reliable NTP (Network Time Protocol) service to hundreds of millions of systems worldwide. Founded in 2003, the project celebrated 20 years of operation in 2023, having served trillions of DNS requests. It operates approximately 6,000+ active servers distributed across every continent.

The pool works through DNS-based geographic load balancing—when clients querypool.ntp.org, they receive server addresses based on their location via GeoIP, ensuring low-latency responses from nearby servers. The project is the default time server for most major Linux distributions and is maintained by Ask Bjørn Hansen along with community contributors.
